Synopsis:
Sebastian “Base” Klukay hasn’t seen his wife since she left him for an NHL ref. His daughter used to be the light of his life, and now they are estranged. He is riding off of a legendary season three years ago when he carried a team to the Stanley Cup championship. Since that high, he has become deeply selfish. He is very replaceable as the season finishes for his NHL team.
When he gets hurt, his manager negotiates a ryder that is favorable to the club. Now Base has to handle a rehab assignment with an affiliate team to earn the salary that the club owes him. Everyone expects him to quit and forfeit the 4 million dollars that he is owed. He has a history of blowing up his life. His wife, Tanya, realizing that Base has nothing to fall back on, tries to help him through the assignment. This almost backfires spectacularly, but a crisis with their daughter brings them together. She was thrown out of her elite prep school for a behavior that seems suspiciously like her father’s.
The collapse of both of their lives brings them together in Syracuse, a town known for the longest running state fair in the country. They have to billet with a family that loves hockey more than a zamboni loves to cut a rink. Base suffers a setback on his injury just when the team needs him most. Now, he has to decide whether to devote himself to his family, his career or himself. There was a time when the keeper would not have batted an eye, but now he has more than just a game in front of him.
